Case Study 33 - Stone Fireplace

The Assignment:
    Install Arriscraft Stone Surround
    Install Mantle, Hearth Stones.

Arriscraft's French Country stones
These manufactured stones look real, and can be chiseled like real stones.
The lengths of the pieces vary, and can easily be chiseled to a new rocked edge.
The insides look the same as the outsides, unlike cement-based cultured stones.

First Row
The stones rest on a segment of stone to be used as the hearth stone, to get the height right.

Brick ties are used every two or three rows depending on the stone's height, two ties per row.

Lintel Bridges Opening
A steel lintel holds the stones over the fireplace opening, necessary as these stones are four inches thick, and heavy.

The homeowners have been invited to choose stones and their placement, with the stones on the moving blanket being their choice of how the top rows will be completed.

Chiseling the Arriscraft Stones
Easier to chisel than real stone, but just like it in principle.
The inside looks like the outside - as it is man-made sandstone it works.
Installing the Mantle
Extra wood reinforcement has been used to hold the mantle.
Here, 8 inch lag bolts are screwed in to the reinforced wood, to hold the mantle.
Epoxy will be injected into the corresponding holes in the wood mantle to secure it.

The building code requires this wood mantle to be 48 inches above the floor, at least.

Widening the Hearth Stone Area
A marble hearth was removed to create space for a larger stone hearth.

The fireplace was upgraded by the homeowner, requiring a larger, 15" deep, hearth.
We have plunge cut and removed wood flooring to widen the space.

Done
New tarps, clean and heavy canvas dropsheets, and clean moving blankets have protected the floor.

This natural looking fireplace will increase the resale value of the home.
