        Before and After

The Assignment:
    Repair a crumbling stone wall
Remove two cedar shrubs whose roots deform the wall.

Falling Apart
Some stones were fallen, others were ready.
Two tall cedars are growing from the wall.

Cutting the Shrubs
Cut into pieces the City will remove.
One of the wall's stones lies in the foreground.

Excavation of Loose Stones
We begin removing loose stones, making the hole bigger.
More stones are taken out than this photo shows.
The bottom stones are re-set, to change their angle.

Some of the earth is removed, set aside.

Chiseling Stones to Fit
Sometimes following the fault lines in the stones, sometimes not, we chisel the stones for a better fit.
Nearing Completion
You can see the landscape cloth behind, where more fill will be added.

Using the stones that are present, versus working with a pallette of new stones, makes it trickier to fit them together. Especially so when no picture of the original wall is provided and some stones have moved around the yard.

A Good Lean
Nicely fit together, with a lean back.
Some of the stones were set lengthwide into the earth, to tie the wall back even more.

Rebuilt
We kept the driveway clean and the work area small.
The top of the wall is now suitable for smaller plants.
And the wall survived its first test, a huge downpour hours later.
