        Before and After

    The Assignment:
Increase the framing support for the wall.
Cover the framing with cement board.
Apply metal lathe, a cement scratch coat.
        Install cultured stone.

    The Prep:
Clean canvas sheets and moving blankets protect the floors.
Dusty work like cutting cement board and stone was done outside.

Boral's Product Sample Board
These take-home sample boards from Merkley Supplies
help you compare styles and colours in the natural
lighting of your home, day through night.

Reinforcing the Framing
Before the cement board is applied, the framing is reinforced.

Cement Board Installation
Not all cement board is created equal.
This stronger cement board from Merkley Supplies is better than others.

Steel Mesh and Scratch Coat
Why do we want strong cement board?
Because we're applying steel mesh and a scratch coat,
then adding more cement when we apply the stone.
We want this to be solid and enduring.
Setting the Stone
We put another layer of cement on the dried scratch coat,
then some cement on the back of the stone, then we adhere
the stone to the wall, cleaning the joints as we go.
The stones on this job were placed more tightly together,
and the wider joints were filled with black cement.
Halfway Done
This 3 sided fireplace has suspended stones above the hearth.
Nearly Done
Here we are approaching the ceiling.
This part requires planning and care to fit nicely.
Done
The floors have been protected, and kept clean.
The thickest joints have been touched up with
black cement. The client is very happy.
