    Case Study: Free-standing Concrete Stairway

    The Assignment:
        Remove the badly cracked concrete stairs.
        Build a new stairs, protect the surroundings.

 

 
Removing the Iron Railing.
We've protected the new grass and new walkway with plywood.
The first of the two railings is now removed.

 
Concrete Removal
Here we've cut the concrete for a cleaner removal.
Bad cracks were evident on both sides.

 
Removing the Old
We removed old concrete, jackhammering down.

 
Formed
We added additional supports to hold the railings.
Here you can see the new grass and walkway were protected.

 

 

Pouring Concrete
Shovelling concrete into position.

A magnesium float is then used to prepare the surface.
A wood float is used next for a smooth surface.
An 'edging tool' rounds the edges, making them less likely to chip.

Rebar
The concrete has fibre-strands throughout, adding great strength.
There is steel mesh at the bottom, rebar set into stairs.
The rebar is pressed in at least two inches deep.
Curing
Here you can see the edging, the parged sides, gentle slopes, brushed steps.
Done!
A strong set of new stairs, of even height, built to last.
Without damaging the grass or walkway.
